Farmington's diverse residential character creates a wide range of design situations. Properties near the historic district along Main Street and Mountain Road often sit close to neighboring homes, require designs that complement traditional architecture, and must work around mature oaks and maples that have been growing for decades. These trees define the character of the streetscape — and killing one with poorly placed construction or grade changes is a mistake that can't be undone. Our survey process specifically maps existing tree root zones so the design works with them.

Newer developments off Scott Swamp Road and in the Devonwood and Tunxis Village areas present different challenges: often flat, with clay-heavy Connecticut soils that don't drain naturally and yards that haven't yet developed the character that mature plantings bring. These properties benefit enormously from a design that plans for maturity — showing how the landscape will look not just at installation but five and ten years out. Farmington is also home to a significant number of larger estate properties, particularly in the area around Coppermine Road and the Farmington Country Club.
